Biography

                  ชิน ตั้งสกุลสถาพร ผู้กำกับหนังสั้นอิสระจากประเทศไทย หลังจากที่เขาได้รับปริญญาตรีจากด้านศิลปะการแสดง เพื่อความเข้าใจในการกำกับที่แท้จริง ชินเริ่มอาชีพการทำหนังจากเบื้องหน้า โดยเป็นนักแสดง พิธีกร และไปเริ่มงานเบื้องหลังจากการเป็น”เดฺ็กเก็บสายไฟ”จนกระทั่งเขาได้ก้าวขึ้นมาเป็นผู้กำกับโฆษณา ทำงานเพื่อเอาเงินไปทำหนังสั้น หนังสั้นเรื่องแรกของเขา “The Coin” ได้รับรางวัล The best film award จากเทศกาล “Bangkok Invisible Film Festival” และโลห์รางวัลจาก Tokyo Video Festival in Japan ด้วย และ ในปี 2004-2005 “Our Love” ได้รางวัลชนะเลิศ ควบสองรางวัลซ้อน จาก Sony Film Festival, Thailand และ National Geographic และ ในปี 2006 หนังสั้น “WAY” ได้รับรางวัลชนะเลิศระดับโลกจาก Short Film Festival of Santiago De Compestela ประเทศสเปน


                   ในปี 2006 กว่าเจ็ดปีการทำงานและทำฝัน เขาตัดสินใจขายรางวัลทั้งหมดเพื่อซื้อตั๋วเครื่องบินขาเดียวสู่นครนิวยอร์ก เพื่อตามหา “ชิ้นส่วนที่หายไป” 4 ปีแรกนั้นเต็มไปด้วยความเข้มข้น มีเพื่อนเป็น Homeless ถูกกลุ่มคนดำรุมถุยน้ำลายใส่ ทั้งเรียนและทำงานเพื่อส่งเงินให้แม่ที่เมืองไทย  ชินเริ่มงานเป็น Bartender เพื่อเรียนรู้มุมมองความคิดของคนที่นิวยอร์ก และเริ่มเรียนศิลปะจาก School of Visual Arts และได้ Certificate ด้าน Film Editing จาก NYU SCPS 


                   อาหารไทยนั้นมีชื่อเสียงมากก็จริงแต่จะมีฝรั่งสักกี่คนที่จะรู้จักศิลปะไทย เพื่อเป็นการแบ่งปันมุมมองทางวัฒนธรรม ในปี 2008 ชินได้ก่อตั้งกลุ่ม Thai Independent Artists in New York  โดยทำให้กลุ่ม “ThaiNdY” ได้มีโอกาสได้แสดงผลงานและยังเป็นการโปรโมทศิลปะของคนไทยสู่สายตาของชาวต่างชาติด้วย ทำให้ ท่านพิริยะ เข็มพล (กงสุลใหญ่นครนิวยอร์ก)ได้แนะนำชินให้กับชุมชนชาวไทยในต่างแดนในฐานะ“นักทำหนังผู้สร้างชื่อเสียงให้กับประเทศไทย”

              “TEXTER” หนังสั้นเรื่องแรกใน New York ของชิน  พูดถึงเรื่องความล้มเหลวของความสัมพันธ์ที่มาจากการสื่อสารสมัยใหม่ ซึ่งหนังเรื่องนี้ ทีี่ใช้งบเพียง $100 แต่ได้เข้ารอบ 8 เรื่องสุดท้ายเทศกาล Short Cuts จาก 4,000 เรื่องทั่วอเมริกาและไปฉายที่ Time Center, Time Square, New York 


             ปี 2009 ชิน ตั้งสกุลสถาพร เป็นคนไทยคนที่สามที่ได้เรียนที่ New York University's Graduate Film Program เป็นปริญญาโท-กึ่งเอกทางด้านภาพยนตร์ที่เข้มข้น 118 หน่วยกิจ เรียน 3-5 ปี คัดเลือกเพียงปีละ 36 คนจากผู้สมัครทั่วโลก มีศิษย์เก่าเช่น (Joel Coen (Fargo), Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain), Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), Spike Lee (Do The Right Thing), Todd Phillips (The Hangover), Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas), Oliver Stone (JFK) และอีกมากมาย) ซึ่งนับเป็นเกียรติอย่างสูงในฐานะคนไทยที่ชินได้รับ Scholarship จาก NYU และ The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) 

           ปี 2010 ชินได้รับเลือกให้กลับมาเมืองไทย สองเดือนเพื่อถ่ายทำหนังสั้นเทิดพระเกียรติในหลวงเรื่อง ฉันเห็น "I see" ซึ่งได้รับรางวัลโลห์เกียรติคุณจาก Film Expo Asia และได้เชิญเข้าไปฉาย ในเทศกาลใหญ่ๆที่ประเทศญี่ปุ่น อเมริกา และ เม็กซิโก อีกด้วย

                   ในระหว่างที่ชินอยู่ที่ New York เขาได้รับเชิญให้ไปเป็นตัวแทนนักทำหนังของประเทศไทย ในงานนานาชาติต่างๆ เช่นงาน Thai Talent at Washington D.C. 2009, งาน Asian-Euro Film conference at Washington D.C. 2011 และงาน Thai-American conference at Royal Thai consulate in LA 2012 และ ชิน นอกจากนี้ ยังเดินทางไปยังเข้าร่วมเทศกาลภาพยนตร์ และถ่ายทำภาพยนตร์ในประเทศต่างๆ เช่น Brazil, Taiwan, Vietnam, Switzerland เป็นต้น 


               ปี 2012 “The Sweatshop” ได้รับรางวัลชนะเลิศสาขาภาพยนตร์สั้นไม่เกิน 20 นาที จากเทศกาลหนัง “Shnit International Short Film Festival” ที่ประเทศ Switzerland ทำให้ชินได้รับโอกาสเข้าพบ ท่านเฉลิมพล ทันจิตต์ (เอกอัครราชทูต) และ ท่านเกศินี โรจน์เด่นดวง (อัครราชทูตที่ปรึกษา) เพื่อจัดฉายหนังสั้นเรื่อง I see และ The Sweatshop. 


ปัจจุบันหนังเรื่อง The Sweatshop ได้รับรางวัลชนะเลิศ จากเทศกาลต่างๆ ได้แก่ 

- Best Short Film from Shnit international film festival in Switzerland 
- Best Short Film from IDFest film festival in UK
- Best Student Film from Macon Film Festival in USA 
- Excellence in Directing Award, First run Film festival, NY, USA
- Best Narrative Film Third World Indie Film Festival, USA  และล่าสุด 
- The First Runner up สาขา รัตน์ เปสตันยี, Thai Short Film 17 

รวมถึงได้รับเกียรติให้เข้าร่วมฉายในเทศกาลภาพยนตร์กว่า 30 ประเทศทั่วโลก

              6 ปีกว่าที่ใช้ชีวิตอยู่ที่ New York ตอนนี้ ชินกลับมาที่ประเทศไทยเพื่อเป็นผู้กำกับอิสระและกำลังเขียนบทเพื่อเตรียมงานถ่ายทำภาพยนตร์ใหญ่เรื่องแรกของเขา นอกจากนี้ชินยังเป็นอาจารย์สอนภาพยนตร์ที่มหาวิทยาลัยสวนสุนันทาและเป็นวิทยากรพิเศษตามสถาบันสอนภาพยนตร์ในที่ต่างๆด้วย ชิน เชื่อว่าว่าเหตุผลที่มนุษย์ควรอยู่นั้น ไม่ใช่แค่ “การเป็นคนที่มีคุณค่า” เพียงอย่างเดียว แต่... รวมถึง “การทำให้คนอื่นเป็น คนที่มีคุณค่าด้วย”

I have the pleasure of scoring music for Chin's films. He is a passionate, innovative Director. Chin's work ethic and work flow has the fluidity of a Coco Chanel-inspired aesthetic: Eloquent, sturdy architecture and close attention to detail from a project's initial ideas through picture lock. Chin and his camera are virtuosic storytellers that portray elegance with every playback on my television screen. I find meaningfulness in the close-ups. Uniqueness in wide shots. Ironic emotions and unexpected surprises in each reel. Chin's cinematography serves as an enhanced, flavorful visual script to the already gripping linear narrative of his films; making my job as a film composer gratifying and humbling. I am able to interpret new perspectives and grow as a musician with Chin's curious perspectives and willingness to take chances on his art. Like the taste of fine champagne, Chin's work is nouveau and crisp while remaining timeless for audiences worldwide. Chin shot my film in Vietnam and I could not be happier with the quality of the photography and lighting. Chin managed a G & E and camera crew of over 50 people, who spoke multiple languages, with ease and good humour. On set, Chin always keeps to schedule whilst giving me and the crew the most artistic choices and an incredible amount of support. Moreover, Chin was professional, trustworthy, reliable and kind. He was also extremely patient and was always the most positive person in the crew. As a director, I was very grateful to have a DP who cared about my movie as much as I did. Biography

Director / Writer / Cinematographer

Chin Tangsakulsathaporn is a native Bangkoker from Thailand. After receiving a bachelor's degree in the Performing Arts, he started his film career as an actor, worked as a cable guy on set, and then he became a Commercial film director. He sold his awards to buy a one-way ticket to New York in 2006. He was awarded a full scholarship from the Graduate Film school at Tisch, New York University and a scholarship from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Now his films have been screening at the film festivals around the world.

Statement

“What are we living for?” Pondering this question does not have a right or wrong answer. The only thing we can do while we are living is to learn and to understand about life. 

Life always has more than one angle; but human lifespan is too short to understand everything. This is the reason I make films to share my aspect to the world. I want to share the love and passion I have for life through the films I make. 

I also do believe that the meaning of what humans are living for is not only “being a worthy person” but also making other people “worthy” as well. For that reason, I would be proud of my accomplishment if my films could help people understand more about life in the different perspective. It will be an honor to me if I could make a better world by my art.
